Hole in the wall
In May Square One created an unforgettable backdrop for the Ernst & Young conference held at the Landmark Hotel in London. The concept, created by Twenty First was to create the illusion of a semi derelict wall through which the delegates would see the presentation. The conference suite was transformed into a partial building site with a mix of real and fake rubble to give the effect of the main wall being partially knocked through and a large screen was mounted within the hole. The screen was made to look and feel as realistic as possible whilst being completely removable leaving no trace once the conference was over.

From an initial design concept we created 3D CAD drawings detailing the different layers needed to build up the effect of a wall that had just been knocked through. The main elements of the set were built in our in-house workshop using our specialist cutting equipment. Our large on-site staging area was used to construct the layers giving our professional scenic artists space to transform them and to create realistic rubble to sit in front of the wall. It was imperative that the hotel suite walls exact colour and paint effect were matched and that no damage was done to the walls.
We built the main “hole” set element from layers of MDF with additional elements to give the effect of electrical structures internal and external to the wall and ensured that we were able to mount the LCD screen within the set. Some elements of the wall structure needed to fit exactly with the presentation footage and so needed to sit exactly in their predetermined places.
Our fitting team and scenic design experts deconstructed and transported the stage elements within the London hotel adding final touches to ensure that the set felt as real as possible and that the rubble, while realistic, was not in the way of the presentation.
Once the 2 day event was over we deconstructed the project, returned the used steel deck and staging to our hire stock and recycled as much of the set elements as possible, we left the hotel suite intact and “rebuilt” as if we had never been there.
Square One took this project form design concept to event reality in 2 weeks.
