June saw Square One taking to the road to visit Cannes to build a two storey beach front stage area for Microsoft as part of the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity.

Working from a 2D drawing of a concept from Twenty First to create a beach front presence for Microsoft as an extension to an existing clubhouse Stage One created a working 3D CAD drawing, successfully tested the build in their on-site creative space and then transported and built the structure on the beach in Cannes.
Talking about the complexity of the project Stephen from Square One said “The main issue with any structure that is not built on a flat and solid surface is always going to be making sure that there is adequate support and building a two storey structure with mezzanine and multiple design aspects that is to sit on a beach gave us many reasons to check and double check our design to be sure that it was safe.”
With only 6 days to erect the building in Cannes and 3 trucks delivering the staging it took a 17 man strong workforce to complete the build. There were several onsite issues including negotiating the steps to the beachfront with large structural beams and avoiding the rain but by opening day Microsoft had a beachfront presence not to be forgotten.
Although the main use of the project was to showcase Microsoft at the event the stage was also used for an unforgettable evening of music curtsey of Calvin Harris.
Projects such as this are complex beyond the usual “how can I create this” way which Square one excel in and with the final build not in the UK and leads times tight it was imperative that the right equipment was sent over and available to the construction team.
Having the space to build the final construction before shipping it to France meant that the team could be sure that all of the design elements that they had built and the structural staging, which was hired from Stage One, fitted together as a whole before they transported it to the festival.
Reflecting on his time on the project Stephen commented that “Seeing the project through from 2D design to structural completion and ultimately deconstruction and return to the UK was a very rewarding process. The project turned out to be much bigger than the original plan and so being able to fulfil the project goals took a lot of knowledge and expertise, something that we have an abundance of”
Square One took this project from design concept to event on time and on budget. If you have a project you would like to talk to us about please do not hesitate to give us a call – all good projects ultimately start at Square One.
