Enter the Accelerator

On 29 March, the Ernst & Young conference was held in the Kings Suite in London?s Metropole Hotel where the suite was transformed with a wraparound set design including larger than life turbines connected by large LCD screens situated between them to emulate a larger than life working particle accelerator.

The concept of the set design, created by Twenty-First, had been translated from an initial design drawing to a 3D stage and set design by Square One using 3D CAD technology. Once this was then translated into working drawings the main elements of the set were created and constructed in our in-house workshop and large staging area to allow our professional scenic artists to add the finishing touches to make it look as real as possible.

We built the main turbine set elements out of MDF, cut in our workshop with specialist cutting equipment, and pipework made to look like working parts of the turbines. The two turbine structures were built to fit between LCD screens showing a video of the accelerator so these also needed to be positioned and supported in exactly the right place to get the full effect. In order for the accelerator to feel realistic the set design elements needed to interact with the video and to emulate the actions on the screen this meant that we needed to synchronise a series of LED’s within the turbines with the footage.

Once deconstructed we transported the set elements and support structure to the London hotel where our fitting team and scenic design experts constructed the full stage elements, screens and set all together for the first time.

The delegates were “wowed” by the overall effect and described it as “the best event ever”. Once the 2-day event was over we deconstructed the project, returned the used steel deck and staging to our hire stock and recycled as much of the set elements as possible, as if we had never been there.

Square One took this project from design concept to event reality in 2 weeks.
